Hi im wondering if anyone can help, i recently went from windows xp sp1 to xp
sp2, on a new harddrive, anyways, i finally got round to plugging my printer
in (usb connection) and it didnt do the normal pop up balloon to install new
hard ware. so i put the cd in and went to install it that way but when
searching for the printer just gave up after a while and said it couldn't
find it. i figured maybe i needed to update drivers on for my usb's so I went
into device manager but usb wasnt listed, i got it to show hidden devices as
well but its still not listed. I didnt have this prob with sp1, but my usb
must be working as i use a wireless mouse and keyboard which the reciever is
plugged in using usb, im at a toal lost and starting to pull my hair out, if
anyone can help i would greatly appreciate it. Oh forgot to mention i also
plugged a web cam in which isn't installed and it isnt find that eitherif it
helps.

thanks. Kev

I just got a similar problem.
I routinely plugged my camera into a front USB port and nothing happened.
Then I noticed my printer wasn't working as well and tried swapping it with
the 2 USB ports I plug into at the front of the PC.
In Device Manager, USB hubs and controllers are there and working properly.
No other signs of trouble.
I checked my bios and USB1 and 2 are both set to 'Auto'. No changes there
that I can see.

Any other suggestions?
Thx
Rob

USB Hub Power Management - disable : Start/run, type DEVMGMT.MSC , then rightclick each USB Hub device, Properties, uncheck the box
on the Power Management tab.

Thanks Mark. I tried that (uncheck the box "Allow for computer to turn off
this device...") but problem persists. BTW, nice, quick shortcut to the Hub
Device.
I also followed the USB Troubleshooter too.

Other ideas?
Thx
Rob

I would tend to think it was some driver problem, rather than broken hardware. Try removing the devices, (HUBS)

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the device, Action menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device
drivers again automatically.

Tried that (included in the Troubleshooter) but no change.
One other thing I neglected to mention was I had a crash and reboot just
before this problem was found. I don't believe this is related though.

Just for the record, the error when I try to print is "Communication not
available. Cannot communicate with the printer".
It probably makes no diff but on the BIOS, I see I mentioned "USB 1& 2" and
it should have read "Serial Port 1 and 2".

Any other ideas?
Thx
Rob

Device Manager's trouble with the USB is no doubt caused by the lack of detection in your BIOS. I would look for a BIOS update file.

Mark, do you mean the settings are possibly incorrect in the BIOS or it is
corrupted and needs to be 'changed' by an upgrade?
My board is a Soyo SY-K7VEM PRO V 1.0.
http://www.soyogroup.com/products/proddesc.php?id=111
The last upgrade for my BIOS version at the Soyo website is dated July 2003
and is a version 2AA2. My BIOS version is a 2BA2 which leads me to believe I
have a more recent upgrade.

Can you give me some guidance as to whether I should try to
upgrade to fix the USB detection?
Also, the manual mentioned about turning on the 'Failsafe Settings'.
Would this be worth trying or are we beyond this?

Thx
Rob

I think upgrading or 'refreshing' the BIOS couldn't hurt, and it will let you know something, anyway. I suppose you have to admit it
might be some physical hardware connection or damage issue. I would find a friendly hardware repair person to have it checked. As
always, it's 'how much to buy new' vs. repair. (An unexpired warrantee would be nice.)

You should Certainly be seeing the USB without any problem. When Device Manager fails to find it, it's not just a driver thing.

I got myself into trouble - tried to uninstall SP2 but it didn't work
properly and Windows wouldn't load, etc.
I reinstalled XP with updates hoping it would load some new device drivers
or something to 'connect' the USB's. No luck. Soyo want $50 for an upgrade
to th BIOS but I doubt it will activate my USB's.

I did a backup file copy of my important files, however I have a glitch. I
copied my folder Outlook Express email from the location "Documents and
Settings\Rob\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\8942......\Microsoft\Outlook Express\"

With the new XP install, I don't have the folder 'Local Settings'. I had 3
users before and have setup 3 users again of which I'm one. What do I have
to do to get the missing folder back or transfer my backup email to a
current folderso I can read my old email?

Thanks
Rob

Hi Mark, I have a similar problem and hopefully you could help. My PC won`t
recognize any new hardware connected to a USB port. I know they`re connected
because of the sound but get this error message:
Error loading newdev.dll.The specified module could not be found.
I understand this is the Add Hardware Device Library, but have no idea what
to do about it. Trying not to uninstall Service Pack 2. Other than that my PC
seems to be fine. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Post a copy of the Error Report from Event Viewer -System tab.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.
