Windows won't load

One of our computers won't boot up, the error message we
get is:
Stop: c0000218 registry file failure
The registry cannot load the hive file
\systemroot\system32\config\software
or its log or alternate

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memeory dump complete
Contact your system administrator or technical support
group for further assistance.

I assume everything is lost and I need to clean off my
hard drive, then re-install windows. Would that be
correct? Pointers would be appreciated. This is Windows
XP home edition.

No, I don't think you should assume that all is lost. Here is a link to
a MS KB article with instructions for recovering from a registry
failure:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;307545

Try this first. If you need more help, post back.

Hello Malke
Thank you for your response. Using the Recovery Console
on the setup CD, I was able to Copy c: the 5 registrys
and delete C: the 5, but could not copy
c:\windows\repair\.... as directed in the article for any
of the 5. I got a message that those could not be
found. Thus, windows XP would not restart. Ideas?

Test for hardware faults, starting with RAM and then hard drive. Post
back if you need help doing hardware testing.

Hi again Malke. Yes I dould use help. i can only get in
using Recovery Console and have never used that before.
I have a list of commands, but I do not see anything that
would check hardware. Thank you again.

Here are generic troubleshooting steps for hardware:

1) open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing); 2) test
the RAM - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - let the test run
for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately; 3) test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from
the mftr.; 4) the power supply may be going bad or be inadequate for
the devices you have in the system; 5) test the motherboard with
something like TuffTest from www.tufftest.com. Testing hardware
failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with known-good
parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are uncomfortable
opening your computer, take the machine to a good local computer repair
shop (not a CompUSA or Best Buy type of store).

Good luck,

Malke
