Windows won't associate file?

brett

I'm trying to associate a file extension to a program. I have to
browse for the program and then click ok to set it. However, Windows
always keeps Notepad as the program that should open this file.

I'm doing this through Windows Explorer. Does any one know how to get
this working?

Thanks,
Brett

Go to the control panel, click on folder options then click on the file types
tab, there you can associate what programs open what files.

Hope that helps ?

Hi
Are you going to 'Tools' 'Folder Options' and then File types and
associating it from there?

Using Open With?

Did you check the Always use this program to open these files box?

Always use this program to open these files
[[Specifies that the next time you open this file, or any other file having
the same file name extension, you want Windows to use the program that you
specify here.]]

To change file associations
1. Right-click a file with the extension whose association you want to
change, and then click Open With.
2. In the Open With dialog box, click the program where you want the file to
open, or click Browse to locate the program that you want.
3. Select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
check box.

I've done all of that. After I select the program to associate with
and have clicked the check box then OK, Notepad is still there. Thing
is, I did at one time associate this extension with no issues. Not
sure why it doesn't work now.

I'm going it through the Windows Explorer Tools and also by right
clicking the file.

Thanks,
Brett

Is this extension a secret or can you tell us what it is?

I have a similar problem whereby my AV program associates a now no
longer used e-mail client when I seek support. I have tried changing the
associations for URL:Mailto in file preferences but it doesn't make any
difference. I have even tried uninstalling the mail client. This just
causes the PC to hang. Any ideas??

Since your problem is completely different than the Original Poster's,
you should make a new post instead of tacking onto this one. This will
enable both you and the OP to get the full attention and help you need.

It's a program I created. The problem is it worked for a while and
then stopped. I'm trying to figure out why and how to fix it.

Thanks,

Oh. Well, then I don't have an answer for you. You might want to post in
a newsgroup for developers/programmers instead. There isn't any way for
us to know why your program stopped working.

Since the OP did not disclose the extension until after I asked that
question your links would have done no good.

Since the OP has also revealed that the problem is with a program that he
created, I am out of here. ;-)
