Hello all,
I have researched back through earlier posts, and none I saw revealed the
question I need.
I have my Desktop pc, and for Xmas, gave a laptop pc with Vista installed.
Unfortuntlly, the "group sale" (pc, printer, router) was great to have, it
came loaded with a minimum of software.
She is needing a word processing program.
From my pc, I have the Works Suite (2004), along with many others.
Can software for XP be used for Vista ??

By the way, I need a new keyboard ... this one misspells terribly ...
Thanks all ....

Did you need the question, or the answer to the question?

Usually the case.

Okay - either purchase one, find a free one, etc.

How many licenses do you have for said software? If it came with the PC
(not the vista one, the "my PC" one) - then you likely only have the one
license. You cannot just start installing it on other machines.

Might I suggest OpenOffice as a freeware alternative to Microsoft Office.
If this machine is for personal use - you lose little if nothing.

Open Office works just fine...
plus most of the apps that work on XP will work on Vista...but not all.

As to your keyboard misspelling...mine does that too...
the keys are not in any type of order...they are all random... qwerty ...etc
not abcde as they should be
that might be the reason <G>

Several points:

1. There's really no such thing as "software for XP." Except for some
utility programs, software isn't written for a specific operating
system, but can be used on a fairly wide variety of operating systems.

2. Most (but not all) software that dates from the days of Windows XP
work just fine in Vista. Even lots of older software will work. Only
an occasional program (most likely a utility) doesn't. Except for two
small unimportant utilities I used only occasionally, every program I
used under Windows XP also worked under Vista.

3. I don't know for sure whether Works Suite 2004 will work under
Vista, but I would be surprised to find that it doesn't.

4. If you have Works Suite installed on your desktop computer, that
copy is not available to also be installed on another computer. You
have a license to use it on a single computer only.

5. If you need a word processing program, there are many choices
besides Works. Here are a few: Microsoft Word, WordPerfect (my
personal favorite), and the free Open Office.

6. Regarding other programs on your desktop computer, whether they can
also be installed on a second computer depends on the licenses for
those programs. You should check their EULAs to find out for sure, but
be aware that most licenses are for a single computer only.
