Windows Vista Word 2007 errors on opening

When I open Documents with Explorer and double-Click on a document name, 9
times out of 10 Word 207 fails to open properly. The error message says:
Download updates for Microsoft Office System Software
This problem was caused by Microsoft Office System Software.
All updates have been posted. This has happened since I recieved the
product last year.
I can open Word and then the document w/o any problems.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried repairing the install of Office 2007? Open Control Panel >
Programs and Features > select Microsoft Office > click Change and use the
'Repair' option when presented.

Also, make sure you have the latest Service Pack for Office 2007 installed:

Do not get the "Repair" option. When I try with the disk it fails with "a
problem caused setup to fail".

The Service Pack update fails with "detection failed, this can be due to a
corrupted installation database"

i UNINSTALLED THE PRODUCT AND THEN REINSTALLED. APPLIED THE SERVICE PACK YOU
RECOMMENDED. IT NOW WORKS.
