Windows Vista-Unblocking Ports?

Hey guys,

Having a bit of a problem. Here's the situation:

My Internet works just great, so does my wireless printing, and so on. So,
my problem is when I game on Halo: Combat Evolved. See, when I try and host a
server, no one can join. This is because (software problem) ports 2302 and
2303 are being blocked. I have tried everything, I MEAN everything. I have
tried disabling all my firewalls (Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, and
Windows Live OneCare). I am connecting through a router but I know for sure
that is not the problem. I have another computer in the house not having the
same problem, it is on Windows XP. This computer (on Halo) use to run
great...before the upgrade to Windows Vista Business Edition. I guess my
problem here is that I need to somehow unblock the port in Windows Vista. Can
you guys please help me with this?

Thanks for all your help in advance!

If you've completely disabled your software firewall then it would
seem that the problem is with the router, but............
I am connecting through a router but I know for sure
that is not the problem. I have another computer in the house not having the
same problem, it is on Windows XP.

And that computer is connected to the same router? If not, it could in
fact be the router's firewall. A great site for router firewall
issues is http://www.portforwarding.com

This computer (on Halo) use to run
great...before the upgrade to Windows Vista Business Edition. I guess my

I can only guess that you in fact didn't completely disable Windows
Firewall and it was still blocking inbound connections.

OR you've got another firewall running as well (e.g Norton, McAfee,
ZoneAlarm....). I doubt this is the case but I it's a shot in the
dark.

I'd enable Windows Firewall and go into the advanced settings and
enable inbound connections to those ports. I would think that would
do it (assuming everything else is OK).

Hey Scott,

Thanks for your help up until this point. All of my computers are on the
same router. The other computers can easily host servers. I tried what you
said to no avail. I am really getting frustrated, please help.

It could still be the router. If the router doesn't know to which
machine it should route traffic coming in on a particular port then it
likely won't get where it needs to. Check your router's port forwarding
settings and see what it has for 2302 and 2303.

Dave
