i currently have a p5b vista premium Asus motherboard. whenever i put it into
sleep mode, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. when i try, it goes
sort of into a half sleep mode and cannot awaken from it. i have to hard
reboot the computer. i called asus tech support and they wont help my
because they said the problem is with Vista and not the motherboard.

Any help from anyone or whoever has heard of this would be appreciated.

thanks

I had the same problem with my DELL XPS 710. Had some "live technician"
help from DELL and the outcome was that it is a VISTA problem with a hotfix
that currently not in the final stages. The advice -- use the "high
performance" power setting that turns off automatic sleeping until the fix
is ready. The display will still sleep according to the monitor sleep
settings.

On my computer, I did notice, however, that if I initiate the sleep event
(by clicking on the START pearl and then clicking on the arrow icon to the
right of the LOCK icon and choosing sleep from the menu) the monitor
immediately goes to power save mode and the CPU shuts down to sleep mode
(the power button flashes green). Then whenever I move my mouse, tap the
keyboard or tap the power button the computer springs to life almost
immediately, exactly where I left it. This is what is supposed to happen!

But, if the computer initiates sleep, I have the problems you
mentioned.

My Vista "sleep" problems were a bit different. Often I would find that I
had no sound after reawaking the system, and even more often my computer
would suddenly freeze up requiring a reboot after about ten minutes of use
after reawakening. I changed the power settings to "High Performance" about
a week ago and haven't had either problem since.

I'm having the same problem on my Dell XPS 210. The computer goes into sleep
mode and I can't revive it. I end up manually pulling the plug as the
computer is frozen. Dell wasn't any help. Last night I changed the settings
to never sleep and never turn off the display.

I did have Vista sleep problems, but it is now resolved. What helped me
investigate the problem was realizing that, at one time, my system sleep
functioned normally, and then stopped working. I was able to pin down the
time period when it stopped working by reviewing the Event Viewer/Windows
Logs/System. Times when the system goes to sleep are signalled by an entry
that looks like: "Information 7/10/2007 10:29:24 AM Kernel-Power"; times
when the system resumes from sleep show this entry: "Information 7/10/2007
1:19:35 PM Power-Troubleshooter".
My logs go back to when I bought the computer in May, so I could verify when
the problem started. Perhaps an initial question for you is: has your
computer always had this problem or did it work ok at one time? Take a look
through your Event Viewer and see if it has ever worked, then see if you can
pin down when it may have changed.

In my case, I had inadvertently tried to install a piece of non-Vista-ready
software, which left artifacts that caused my sleep problems. After I
cleared that up, sleep became functional again. Hope this helps.
