Windows Vista Mail error

D

docvic

I created a new account in Mail from my Live Mail account. I received my
messages from that account, but when I tried to send a new message from
Windows Mail I received the following message:
The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Test', Account:
'pop3.live.com', Server: 'smtp'.live.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0800CCC0E

I can't find a link to this error code anywhere in the searches suggested by
windows, nor can I find anything to change in the mail account properties.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Just curious. Is that a typo, or that's how you'd entered the smtp server
name ?
You entered : Server: 'smtp'.live.com'
Shouldn't it be : Server : ' smtp.live.com ' ? You have a symbol " ' " after
the letter " p ".

Also try port 587 instead of 25.

Assuming you corrected that typo in smtp.live.com, change the port
number to 587.

You were right about the ' mark after smtp.
I changed the pop3 setting to 587, now when I try to send messages, the
screen blips as if it were blocked by popup blocker and doesn't send the
message. I'm receiving messages just fine. I'm using widows live mail as my
server.
Any new suggestions?

I don't understand your reference to "using Windows Live Mail as my server".
The error message you supplied clearly came from Windows Mail, not Windows Live Mail.

Are you getting a different error message now? If so, post a copy.

I open Windows mail from my desktop, and can't send a message using
POP3.live.com. I'm receiving from smtp.live.com. When I attempt to send, I
get a quick "blip" on the screen, then my send message file is still open.
I've checked my sent messages, and they're not sent.

Could this possibly be due to a firewall setting? I've disabled my McAfee
e-mail screening, but I believe Windows Defender is still open, but those
programs should work together, shouldn't they?

Any additional advice is more than welcome.

PS- there are no error messages, not even the one I started this discussion
about. As far as using Windows Live, I mean Windows Live settings for POP3
and SMTP.
Thanks, docvic

Sounds like you have the servers swapped.
You should be sending with smtp.live.com and receiving with
pop3.live.com.

Windows Defender is 100% compatible, but McAfee isn't.
McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes a while before symptoms start showing up.
First of all, turn off email scanning in McAfee, although that is seldom sufficient.
Next, delete that email account (because it has been corrupted by McAfee),
restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.

If the problem continues, the only way you can prove or disprove that
McAfee is the culprit is to uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of overly intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:

It's very possible I have the POP3 and SMTP reversed, but I was following the
menu driven instructions. I'll try to set that up- but why am I receiving
mail from windows live mail, just not sending it.

As far as McAfee, I'll be completely uninstalling that soon as it expires,
but I would like your recommendation. You said I should try: (but it's blank).

I agree that e-mail antivirus is unnecessary. I notice though that even
Windows Defender stops attachments, popups and additional pages from opening.
It does so with the notifications I receive from this discussion group, even
though I mark it as "safe".

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example (e-mail address removed)
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows
Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)

How about go back to port 25 if 587 is no go.

So I have to use a password at setup? Or can I fix this by using properties,
advanced settings, and change them? Also, if I do that, should I re-write my
outgoing messages or can I just hit send?

G

Gary VanderMolen

Port 587 should always work. I don't know why mail servers even bother
with port 25 anymore. It's a historical artifact.

McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
I recommend you uninstall it now. Follow that up their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

Of the free antivirus programs, the ones that are compatible
with Windows Mail are:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

However, with either of those, during the install phase you must select
'custom' install, and then deselect the email scanning module so it won't
install.
