Windows Vista Fails to install using an ATI X1600 Pro AGP 512MB Vi

Here is a workaround for the BSD in the completing phase of Vista:

After the first reboot during the installation press "Shift" + "F10" to open
a command window.
Run "C:\windows\system32\devmgmt.msc" to open the Device Manager. Find the
primary and secondary video adapters and disable them. Note: Windows is still
in the installation so don't take too long to do this.

The Vista installation will complete now.

If you have a new ATI Device driver you would like to install just complete
all wizards/ screens to get to the Vista desktop. Open the Device Manager and
re-enable both video adapters. (Do not re-boot at this time)
Install the new Video driver and reboot. The new Vista driver should be
installed when Vista reboots.

I have tried 3 different motherboards on 2 PCs and all 3 motherboards fail
if
using this card.

1. ASUS P4S800D-X (Sis 655FX & 964 Chipset)
2. ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe (Intel 875P Chipset)
3. Giga-Byte[GA-8IPE1000-G Rev 4.0] (Intel 865PE Chipset)

I am running the latest BIOS on all 3 motherboards.
There is no AGP speed setting for any of the motherboards
as far as I can see. The only PCI cards I have are my SoundBlaster Audigy
2
ZS Platinum and an ATI HDTV Wonder. I removed both cards and the problem
is
still there.

After thinking about your questions I thought it would be smart to tweak
any
motherboard setting that may be contributing to this problem.

I used my PC with the ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard with the following
changes to the BIOS:

1 Stopped overclocking and set Performance Mode to Standard.
2. I made sure Graphic Adapter Priority was set to AGP/PCI.
3. Changed Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA to No.(was yes)
4. Changed Aperture Size to 256MB from default of 64MB.
5. Changed MPS Revision to 1.4 from default of 1.1

I can't believe it but Vista installed perfectly!

I wondered if the overclocking was the problem so I returned the system
back
to overclocking. (AI Overclock Timer 10% and Performance Mode to Turbo)

I was still able to install Vista with no problem.

The only thing that I thought was worth changing was Aperture Size so I
changed it back to 64MB.

The problem returned. (Aperture Size was the problem)

I hoped the other ASUS motherboard has an Aperture Size of 64MB but it was
256MB by default so I can't say what will make the other ASUS motherboard
work. In my opinion this is not the real fix for this ATI Video card
failure.

I don't think the power supply is the problem (430 Watt) because I can get
it to work by changing the Aperture size. (Is 430 Watt sufficient?)

Since I couldn't get Vista Build 5840 to install the problem is still the
ATI Video Driver. I wonder if the ATI Radeon RC 2 driver will be newer
than
the driver included with Build 5840. Does anyone have any leaked
information
Have you checked to see if your system BIOS is up to date and have you
checked to insure that the speed of your AGP slot in your BIOS is set to
that required by the card (probably 8X)? Also if you have any other card
in
the PCI slot next to the AGP slot have you moved it to another location?

Thanks, I'll report back after I test the new Driver.

After testing the new ATI RC 2 video driver there is good news and bad
Good If you use the workaround procedure I posted earlier you can get
vista to install and work.

Bad Windows Aero doesn't work.

Maybe the next Windows Vista DVD will have a working basic driver from ATI.

I have the same problem somewhat..

I've been trying Vista since December.
School gave me beta copy, also got other copies from the net etc. Worked fine.

Last week been trying to reinstall Vista again. I noticed it takes time and
long to get into each different screen (very weird didnt happen before). Then
after already installed and Welcome screen is going to show up. BOOM!! it
crashes reboots doesnt show me no error or nothing.

Then the screen comes saying something wrong happened etc and etc etc I go
into safe mode tells me windows cannot finish in safe mode, so I boot back
normal again. and happens again.

After Vista has been installed it keeps rebooting and crashing itself when
its about to go to Welcome Screen (First run after being installed)

Ok.. i'm in a technical/technology school. We been testing Vista since
september. i started in december personally and all worked fine in my pc. But
since January everything has been different dont know why. We got the MSDN
dvd and it takes a long time to go from each screen to screen (partition, etc
etc). Same error happens.

I just got the Retail DVD and it went installed fast so I thought it was
going to work, but when it rebooted I already knew it wasnt going to work. SO
why am I having this prob? when it worked before.

I put in the dvd and boot from it following the directions it told me to go
into repair.
Repair mode cannot find a solution. So I vew the detais of the error and
this is what it showed me

This is today with the Vista Retail DVD my school gave me a free copy but
gotta return it back and they're going to give me Vista for free but I don't
know if its Home Pro or what.

I have ATI Video x1600 XL AGP8 256, ATI Video AGP 4x/8x x1600 Pro. 512 and TV
Wonder 650 PCI, all have the same problem. The only video driver that works
is a VGA Display driver by Microsoft. My guess is that build 5840 will fix
the problem dealing with ATI drivers. - Let's all make a circle and say a
prayer to Microsoft to hear us speak.

Sad to say that the posting (Feb. 21, 2007) From ATI concerning Video driver
Catalyst® 7.2 Display Driver for Windows Vista (32 bit) will not work
either. I have tryed all of the driver that was posted by ATI, and found out
that they are re-tooled XP drivers. - Still looking for an answer from ATI,
and Microsoft.

The only way I was able to get two ATI drivers (x1650) to install was to do a
clean install of XP Pro., than do an upgrade to Vista. The down side to this
was that Vista 32 bit (only) would not work in the 3D mode which gives Vista
"Aero". As for ATI or Microsoft admitting anything wrong would be like
putting teeth from a hen.
