Windows User Name Assignment

I am running a small all Windows XP SP2 workgroup with file sharing enabled.
When one of the users opens up a Excel document it will give a message that
the file is opened for editing by user "Joe Smith". Indeed Joe Smith has the
file open, but I am trying to figure out how to change that user name, since
Joe Smith no longer uses that system and the name "Joe Smith" is confusing
some of the other users. I made changes listed under KB 310441 and it changed
the system registration information, but did not help me with the "Joe Smith"
broadcast.

You need to create a new user on the machine formerly used by Joe Smith.
You may want to name the new user account something more generic. If
you want all of Joe Smith's data and settings on the new account, copy
it per this link:

This really doesn't have anything to do with the Excel error. Two people
cannot have the same document open at the same time.

I think the name you are getting is in fact the one set in Excel itself.
Change it in the menu's. Go to..

Tools\Options
Select the General Tab
Change User Name.
Save and Close.
