Windows Upgrades causing instability in my laptop - Urgent help!!!

I am not computer literate at all and am desperate for help here.

I own a Compaq NC6000 laptop. Two days ago I was prompted to download an
update via the wee yellow shield in the bottom right hand corner. I did so
and restarted the computer as prompted. But after doing so, all search tabs
i.e. google,askjeeves, imdb.com, RBS all will not allow me to type anything
into their boxes. It is the same with everything I try.
Today I was prompted to update my computer again. After doing so
successfully, my internet explorer will not work. I click on the icon, the
window opens up for less than a second then closes down again.
The computer is prompting me to download yet another update but I don't wish
to do so for fear that it is a virus corrupting my computer further.
Each time I downloaded an update, a small grey box would open in the middle
of the screen to say it was either downloading or installing lots of .exe
files and others. It didn't appear to be normal windows update practice.

Thanks for the reply, problem is, I can't open IE in order to update
manually. The window just closes again. Is there any other way I can do this?

A few questions.
1. Has Windows Explorer been affected;
2. Do you have up-to-date antivirus software installed;
3. Do you have any alternative browsers;
4. Is System Restore turned on?

You could
a: try a different browser to see if it is also affected
b: try Add/Remove programs to uninstall the suspect update
c: use System Restore to restore your computer to before the update was
installed...
