I downloaded Windows XP SP1, 1.9MB ( I had previously
downloaded other portions.) When I got to the install
wizard, installing files and patches, it said it would
take an estimated 400 minutes. This is about 7 hours! I
cancelled the installation. Why would it take so long? I
downloaded other windows updates and they only took a few
minues to install. Just what is the installation process
doing?

the file you have downloaded that's 1.9mb is only the installer and
downloader. actually the whole sp1 file is 133mb.

during installation, the file you have downloaded will check what updates
you already have in your computer and what you don't have. those you don't
have will be added to its list for download.

it is best to download the whole 133mb file and save it on a cdr so that you
won't have to download so much the next time you install windows xp and sp1.

A 133MB file downloaded at 2kb is 18 hours. Don't think I
want to do that. Can't wait until we get cable or DSL in
my area. But thanks, anyways.

You can order a free security CD from MS that has SP1a along with all
the hotfixes through October of last year. Any subsequent hotfixes
download once from the Windows Update catalog and burn to a CD. Then you
have them if you need to reinstall for any reason.
