windows updates

I have WinXP SP2 on a fairly new and clean (as far as I can tell) computer.
Unitl tday I have had Automatic Windows updates turned off. When I try to
update my windows installation either through the heklp utility in control
panel or through "securtity sentting" in the tray, I get no where...even
with automatic updates turned on. In the first case, the checking for
updates window opens and then nothing is displayed. In the second case,
Windows Internet Explorer opens, the dsl modem lights may flash furiously
for a moment or two but the explorer window remains blank. Even upon
opening, and while the modem is flashing, the word "done" is displayed at
the bottom left hand corner of the IExplorer window.

It appears that I cannot update my Windows installation...am I missing
something here? I use AVG anti virus...clean...and regularly run spybot.

Hi DW,
Clear your caches from the IE window properties, offline contents and
cookies, to do that, Right Click your IE Icon on your Desktop and select
properties then on the General Tab clear caches.
Click On Privacy Tab and click on Sites or (Edit) whichever show and assign
the Microsoft web address as Always Allow, the same on the SecuirtyTab on
Trusted Sites add Microsoft Update site to trusted sites.
Click OK/Apply.
Open Run Command and type: CMD press OK and when the Prompt command open
type ipconfig /flushdns Press Enter on your Keyboard/Keypad, then Type
exit and Reboot your computer and try the Update.
Just curious, do you RUN Spybot in Tea Timer Mode, it could be Spybot keept
your Old settings for the IE and OS and now blocking your changes, if it is
the case try to Disable the Spybot from the Starting Up programs and try your
Updates.
HTH
Please write back with your findings
Regards
nass
