If you allow automatic updates do you still need to go check the Windows
site frequently?

Kinda/sorta.

Automatic Updates will seek, download and install (according to your
settings) all *critical* updates. If you choose Custom Install at Windows
Update site, you are often offered optional software and hardware updates
you may want (e.g., KB887797), though none of them are "critical" updates.
Whether you want to (or should) install them is up to you.

(Experienced users will seldom if ever install hardware [e.g., drivers]
updates offered at Windows Update. Rely on the manufacturers' web-sites for
these, IMO.)
