Is there any other way than online to do Windows Update? I just reinstalled WindowsXP Professional after my computer became infected with a worm that trashed most of my harddrive. I do not want to put the computer back onto the internet until I am sure I have the latest security patches available.

It's my judgement (others free to disagree) that if you ensure you turn
on the firewall (or better yet, in my opinion, get an external hardware
router/firewall as sold by Linksys, et. al.) you will be immune from the
worms. This will enable you to then install updates in the normal
fashion to protect your machine from things that exploit Microsoft's
software, e.g. Internet Explorer.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Hi Christopher,

Order the Security CD, it will have all the critical updates through Oct
2003.

Make sure that the firewall is in place before going on line, even for a
moment. If then you only go to the update site, you should be
adequately safe while you get the key updates. Start with 828741 and
835732. Or, if you can wait for delivery, consider getting the
consolidated CD of security updates (which includes SP1) - order at
