Windows update

My friend has just been given a laptop from his son. When he went to the
windows update centre he was advised that this was not a genuine version of
windows!! However, he does have a copy of windows that he bought for his old
98 system (I think it is an upgrade version). Could we somehow install this
on his laptop without loseing any of his settings. He has just paid out for
BT to install the service and does not want to lose this. Can anybody please
advise.

Hello,

I understand that your friend bought an upgrade version of XP to upgrade his
previous WIndows 98 system to XP.

If so, you can not install XP on the laptop as it is already installed on
the old PC. You can, however, transfer it by deleting it from the old PC and
installing it in the laptop. Have your Win98 discs handy as well, as Setup
will request for them to verify.

With regards to installing it without losing any setting, you may be able to
do so by using Magical Bean Keyfinder to change the Key and running the XP
validation tool again. For this, the XP editions must match - e.g. installed
XP home and XP home, not professional. No guarantee that this works though.

Note that if the old PC uses Win98 OEM edition, I am not sure of whether the
XP upgrade is transferable to the laptop as per the licence agreement.
