windows update

I cannot access the microsoft windows update web site! I have windows xp home
edition, the automatic update is turned on, but I don't think it is working.
The web site starts to connect, but never will! Help!! Also, windows will not
shut down properly,it freezes at windows is shuting down. I have to push the
power botton to shut it off!
