I recently had to reinstall Windows XP because the
computer had been running very slowly, even after
rebooting several times. In addition to this, I was
unable to go into the System option in the Control Panel.
So, after reinstalling, I downloaded updates to Windows
XP, and once again I am having almost the same problem
after installing the update. This update is KB823980.
Only this time, everything is still working as it should.
Any ideas?

I called HP (the company of my laptop, by the way..) and
they couldn't solve the problem, and told me to call
Microsoft. I couldn't find a free Microsoft support link
or even talk to a Microsoft professional.

Thanks for your help, Rob.

Hp was incorrect in telling you to call Microsoft. I think but I not
positive that tech actual violated the agreement between MS & HP. I
would call hp back and try again. To me it sounds like something
maybe wrong with hardware inside the computer or xp didn't install
correctly.
