i can`t get rid of the windows update icon from my toolbar, when i log on it tells me to install update KB898461, when i do this it then tells me that the update cannot be installed, when i shutdown the pc it then says that 1 update is being installed, any ideas whats going on and will this stop any further auto updates being downloaded and installed ??

KB898461 installs a permanent copy of Package Installer for Windows to enable software updates to have a significantly smaller download size. The Package Installer facilitates the install of software updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems and other Microsoft products.

If you don't want to auto install windows update go to Control Panel>Security Centre>Automatic Updates> and tick Turn Off Automatic Updates.

I would then suggest going to the Windows Update page and checking what updates you require and downloading them from there :thumb:

Thanks,

what if i do want to auto install the updates, as this seems to be permanantly stuck in this mode will it stop future updates being downloaded and installed ??

Stop the auto update as in my earlier post, then go to the Windows Update site and download all the updates from there and see if they download and install correctly.

After that, if you want to go back to auto-install reset the auto update option in Security Centre :thumb:
