Windows Update won't work

I have Automatic Updates on, but I don't seem to be getting them. I just
installed SP2 without any problems, or so I thought. I manually tried to get
the Windows updates and this is what happens. I get the message saying:
Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue: Register or reinstall the files for me now
(Recommended). I select that option. It goes through the process of
downloading and registering and yet nothing happens. What could be the
problem?
