Windows Update will not run

B

big D

I have a PC here with a (legit) copy of Windows XP Professional, SP2. Fresh
install.

Basically everything works as it should until you beging the "check for
updates" part of the process, and at that time the PC will just sit for
hours scanning for updates. It never completes the scan and asks you to pick
which updates to install. FWIW, I also tried setting the PC to automatically
download updates from the catalog and allow me to choose which ones to
install at a later date. That does not work either. Every other website I
visit has no problems. The PC is a little slow (its an older P3, 1ghz) but
other than this it works fine.

I have tried IE6 and IE7. There are no software firewalls installed.
Pop another PC on the same DSL connection and it works - no problems at
all.....

Has anyone ever experienced something similar to this? And if so, how did
you resolve it? I dont even really know where to start.

Thanks in advance.....

Possible workaround for some: Change the default from Microsoft Update to
Windows Update: Go to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings in left
pane > Scroll to bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update > Disable
Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only (check).

With Windows Update as your default, you will need to check in at Office
Update to keep your Office applications fully patched:
