Windows Update Taskbar Icon&NT on access scanner message

Recently after installing some updates from the windows
update site,I ended up with a windows update taskbar icon
that when I move the mouse pointer on it puts up a box
that says:Downloading Updates 0%. Well,I`m not downloading
any updates!and,I can`t make the Icon go away( at least
not by any of the suggested methods
("settings",hide,ect...or "right clicking on it and
deleting it,in fact it won`t even give me that option).
All of the updates I installed were successful ( according
to my "update history").I`m wondering if it has something
to do with my recently installing McAfee through
AOL,because if I leave the McAfee update option
on "automatic" every night it searches for updates and
then I get a windows error box stating:Windows has
encountered a problem, ect with NT on access scanner, and
has to close,ect...are both of these issues related? Help
with either or both would be appreciated!

I experienced this same problem. I could not get the box to go away until I
installed SP-2 from the windows update site for xp pro. I'll never know what
the problem was, but it was cured by SP2.
