Windows update slowing my computer?

R

Robert Ginn

Since letting WindowsXP install an update a week or so ago, my computer has slowed by a factor of
about 15. Screen paints and closures sometimes take up to a minute. Some programs have been
acting erratically. It's all extremely annoying.

Is there any history of this occurring elsewhere, coincident with Windows update?

Thanks.

Well, there isn't a direct history but it has happened to a few
people. Usually it's because of corruption that was either there
and previously unnoticed or the download itself was corrupted or
something went wrong with it.
Depending on the condition of the machines, people ARE having
trouble with downloads, but it's not that common.

I would suggest:
-- Trying to go back to a Restore Point prior to the update.
-- If you can't do that, uinstall the update.
-- Update and Run your antivirus scans
-- Update and Scan for spyware and malware
Then try it again and see if it doesn't work better next time.

You really haven't provided enough information to make much of an
accurate guess. It's better too much detail than too little.
WHEN did this start, which updates do you think caused it, on
what dates, and so on?

Thanks, Pop. I tried restoring to two different dates that were in bold type, and Windows failed
both times. I don't know anything about Restore, but wonder why the dates were in bold type if
there were no setpoints there.

I've scanned both for viruses and spyware. I'll uninstall the last update (it had something to do
with an advantage---for whom I don't know, but not me, apparently).

The problems started about a week ago and the only things I had done were to allow the Windows
update and to upgrade Webroot spyware. I'll delete both and see where I am then.

Thanks again.
