I've downloaded all the XP updates to a network share
using the Windows Catalog. How do I configure my users to
auto update there computers from this share location? or
am I asking to much.

Find out how Windows Update Services (WUS)-the next
version of Software Update Services (SUS)-can help simplify
and automate the deployment of patches and updates in your
organization.

There is no automation for the updates you have downloaded
from the catalog. At each machine each update can be manually
triggered (dbl-click) or one can write a batch file that will run
them one after the other. Writing such a batch is a little more
work thatn it should be as each update many have a different
syntax that should be used in the batch file. See the KB or the
ms0x-0yx security bulletin for the syntax of each.

If you own a server version of Windows, consider installing
SUS (WUS once it release) to fully automate updating your
clients.
