Windows Update Problem

Greg

I recently had a problem after trying to install Service
Pack 2, when I rebooted my machine I got the dreaded blue
screen {unable to locate component}.

I ended up reinstalling WinXP Home and starting
installing updates. The problem I am now having, I keep
getting prompted to install the security patch KB828741,
even though I have installed it several times. I've
tried live update as well as the Windows update website.
My install history shows that I've successfully installed
this update a half a doze times.

Anyone can help me??

How did you "reinstall" XP Home? Did you write zeros to your hard disk first
or did you install it over itself?

Possible solutions:

1 - Delete or rename the folder c:\windows\system32\catroot2

Then do the updates again.

2 - Start/stop the auto-update service.

Start, control panel, administrative tools, services, right click automatic
updates, click stop. Right click again, click start.

I booted off the sin xp ce and went into the repair
option. At the command prompt I typed C:\chkdsk /r to
run the checkdisk repait utility. After that I
reinstalled windows and I could then reboot.

This may or may not relate to your problem. I did a new
build on a notebook and Windows Update kept popping up and
telling me that there were 2 new updates to install. I
would click install and it looked like they were installing
but Windows Update kept popping up telling me that there
were 2 updates ready to install. Always the same ones. So I
ran Windows Update manually and it said that there was a
new version of Windows Update. I installed that and now I
don't have the same 2 updates trying to install anymore
