windows update problem

Just purchased XP Home (oem) today and done a fresh install. Everything
okay, all drivers sorted but I have a windows update problem.

It wants to install Microsoft Installer 3.1 but everytime it fails. This
leaves the automatic update icon permanently down by the clock waiting to
install it everytime. I can turn off updates to get rid of the icon, but am
more concerned about why I cannot install this update. Until I install this
update I cannot get further updates as it wants me to install that first.

Installation gives error code 0x8007F007

I found a thread on another forum here
http://www.archivum.info/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/2006-04/msg00298.html

This is a post by Carey Frisch MVP and it says to download and run WGA
diagnostic tool, I did this and the updating of that file still fails.

You're welcome :)

Thanks for letting us know which method worked for you.

No problem. I don't like it myself when people reply to say they fixed it
but don't post the solution :)
