Hello, Closed system down July 4,2005 late PM, proper shut down.
Started system July 5,2005 early AM. After my normal system checkup went
online to Microsoft Update Site. During MS update check a popup appeared
asking: Do you want to install this software? "Microsoft Windows Publisher".
I closed the popup and soon after received a "problem cannot display page". I
closed the browser. A few minutes later I opened a browser and clicked on a
Google link, received a "cannot find server" this happened to any link or
typed in URL. Opened two different browsers with the same effect. Tried to
ping without success. Used second stand alone unit "Windows98se" same ISP no
problem.
Rebooted 1st. unit same problem. Checked ISP and security settings no
changes. Used "GoBack" to return to first am boot, Went online no problem.
Shut down browser then ten minutes later opened browser and same problem
appeared.
Went off line. Emptied cookies, temp and IE temp and offline content. The
following have been updated within the last two days. Ran AVG v7 free, Spybot
sd v1.4, Ad-Aware se, Stinger, CWShredder and HighJackThis. Have
SpywareBlaster, WinPatrol and AdShield (hosts file set as read only). No
problems found. Unit operates fine.
Setup: WindowsXP Home SP2 all security updates. Sygate Personal Firewall.
Browsers used IE6, Firefox and OffByOne.
56k modem connection.
Noticed IE6 now uses the new Windows Update v6.
I can continue using "GoBack" but prefer a solution to this anomaly.
Sent problem information to the MS Update Site help and support.
Thank you for any assistance.
Take Care.

Hello, Microsoft supplied prompt assistance.
The popup for "Microsoft Windows Publisher" needed to be installed.
Then Update Site software was installed and the situation was resolved.
There was a problem caused by the Update Site to the firewall, this was
resolved by removing and reinstalling the firewall.
Take Care.
