Windows update problem

Windows update site sticks at "Checking for the latest version of the
Windows Update software..." MS help site suggests turning off firewalls etc,
which I've done, but something is still blocking it. Internet Options all
set at Default.

Anyone know what the minimum set of services and start-up items is to allow
internet connection, if I disable others from msconfig?

Then perhaps try the WU NG stating what you've already tried and what OS etc
