I have been unable to download any new updates for Windows XP Pro. I
have tried using windows update. A list of downloadable updates
appears. However, when I go to download them, a window pops up saying
"The updates are being downloaded and installed", but nothing happens,
and nothing is downloaded.

I read somewhere that I have to start Background Intelligent Transfer
Service. But when I try to do this I get an error message saying
"Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service
on Local Compter. For more information, review the System Event Log.
If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and
refer to service-specific error code -2147023535.

I'm not sure if it's related, but I have been unable to add this
computer to my home network for file/printer sharing.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Jason

Jason,

Go to Start > Run. Type services.msc and hit OK. Check the setting
for BITS and make sure its set at automatic. If not, right-click BITS
and click on Properties. It will open another window and change the
settings there. Close all windows, reboot, and try to download the
updates again...

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work. I went
to BITS properties and changed startup to "Automatic" and restarted.
I then tried to change the service status from "stopped" to "start"
but received the same error message: "Windows could not start the
Background Intelligent Transfer Service on Local Compter. For more
information, review the System Event Log.
If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and
refer to service-specific error code -2147023535. Any other
suggestions?

THANKS!

I suspect you may be missing a system file. Try "sfc /scannow" to replace
the file(s); your install media may have to be "in the drive" for this to
work properly.
Otherwise find and report the relevant data from the log file.

Thanks Joseph,

Unfortunately, this did not work either. Can you tell me where to
find the log file?

I normally use system management console to view the system logs. Oh fudge,
now i can't remember how to access it. ISTR something like right click on
"My Computer"
