windows update lockups

i know that many have reported issues with using windows
update and there knowledge base acticles on work-
arounds...my issue is that, after trying to use windows
update unsuccessfully ( i got the update software button
repeatedly) the browser now locks up the system before i
can even finish typing in the url for microsoft'
website...has anyone experienced this level of problem? i
am running a very recent (two days ago) clean install of
XP Pro on a Dell laptop with a new harddrive

Delete your Temporary Internet Files and Clear History.
