While trying to manually update my computer using Windows update, my
web browser crashes after opening the site again inside a frame. This
happens after I choose get updates by Custom option, then Software,
optional or Hardware, optional from the left pane.

I can install High Priority updates ok. I am using IE7.

A 3rd party add-on is causing this issue. BitComet is one of those
add-ons that causes this, specifically, v0.84.
From a post in the Windows Update newsgroup by GaryM. :
1) Open Internet Explorer
2) Select Tools -> Internet Options
3) Select the 'Programs' tab
4) Click the 'Manage add-ons' button
5) Select 'Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer' in the dropdown
6) Select each item in turn that has a Type of 'Browser Helper Object' and
disable it
7) Click OK
8) Start Windows Update (or Microsoft Update) and click the 'Custom' button
9) When the list of updates appear, you should now be able to select the
"Software, Optional" or "Hardware, Optional" without problems

One could also open Internet Options via the Control Panel, too, and
accomplish the same task.
