Everything has been working pretty good except check disk (i'm working on
that 1) now For the last hour I have tried to run windows update. I get to
the update page, custom or express install. And "anything" I click on that
page freezes up that page, If I try to exit the page nothing, it is totaly
froze up. I did the control/ alt/delete thing and I usually got it to stop
and close the page and send an error report but a couple of times even the
control/alt/delete box froze up. I have nothing else going on, I did a
defrag, disk cleanup, search and destroy, virus scan, everything was good, I
even finally restored to a date that I know the computer was working great
and nothing helps. I have XP Home edition. SP2 not installed.
Please, anybody, I need help. whats going on? How do I fix it.

Hi Chuck,

Suggestions:

You can use Event Viewer to view and manage the event logs, gather
information about hardware and software problems, and monitor Windows
security events.

To view the event log: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or
Start/Run/eventvwr.

To review Shutdown Event Tracker data, Open Event Viewer. Click System Log,
scroll to the Event column, and find entries with the number 1075.

And also:

Go to Start/Run/Msinfo32/Hardware Resources, Components/Problem Devices and
Software Environment/Windows Error Reporting.

Go to Help and Support/Pick a Task (left side)/Use Tools to view.../(left
pane)My Computer Information/(right pane)View the status of my system
hardware and software/Hardware/Update and Troubleshooters.

How to Troubleshoot Hardware and Software Driver Problems
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q322205

Try running the DirectX Tool: Start/Run/Dxdiag, Lower Hardware Acceleration
(Display/Settings/Advanced/Troubleshoot/Hardware Acceleration). Check
System Info for problematic issues: Start/Run/Msinfo32/Hardware Resources
and Components/Problem Devices and Software Environment/Windows Error
Reporting.

Report Error's to Microsoft automatically

Start/Run/gpedit.msc/Computer Configuration/Administrative
Templates/System/Error Reporting. Right click Report Errors/Properties.
Check off Enable and then check off, Do not display links to any MS provided
more information web sites. Apply, ok.

I looked through all the events and 1075 was not in there. Help and support
page says, Obsolete aplications and drivers (None). hardware updates (none
required for anything in that list). everything else is good. I clicked on
windows update again and it froze up again, I sent the error report and this
time a new page came up saying somthing like there was no solution for the
error reported and suggested updating to SP2 and took me to the update page
again. this time I clicked express install and again it all froze up. How do
i get an update when the page freezes every time no matter what I click on,
on that page? every other web page I go to seems to work great. If the update
is there and ready to be downloaded why doesnt it just do it or at least
notify me automatically? I have auto update turned on.
I'm loosing it, I dont know enough about computers to do a lot of the
items you mention and I live to far away from town to take my computer in and
get fixed.
But I sure appreciate all your help.

I know Iam a pain but here is more info. Not only does windows update page
freeze up but if I right click "my computer" I can click on anything and it's
ok, if I click the automatic updates tab That will freeze up as well.
Following some of your other advice i got this,

DirectX (no problems found).
Windows error reporting (a lot in there) mostly
Application hang, iexplorer.exe version 6.0.2800
Fault bucket, 21955421.&x000a
helpctrexe, version 5.1.2600

As for the gpedit.msc I enter that in the run box, hit enter and get this ,
"Windows cannot find gpedit.msc"

I'm still trying, I reall y dont want to drive 400 miles to take this to the
shop. Thanks again Kelly.

Most welcome, Chuck.

Notes:

gpedit.msc is for Pro.

Why doesn't Help and Support work (for helpctr.exe)
