Windows update hanging

Hi

I have just reformatted a Sony Vaio laptop to get rid of corrupted files. My
version of XP Home is SP1. So, after restoring Norton Internet Security 2005,
I added SP2 from a CD. I have since asked Windows Update to download the most
recent updates, but after selecting the hyperlink for critical updates, the
next page states that "Windows Update is looking for available updates". The
green "snake" keeps rolling across the page, but will not go to the next page
to tell me what updates are available.

Thinking that my installation of SP2 may have created a problem, I
uninstalled it, but the problem continues. In fact the system should be
offering to install SP2 and other updates, but is not doing so.

I would be extremely grateful if someone could direct me to the fix for what
is, I suppose, a problem known to others but not to me.

Try this: Start>Run and type in each line without the quotes hitting <Enter> at each end:

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll

Thank you for looking at my problem so quickly. I will try this out and get
back to you with my results

Well, I entered the lines as you suggested. Each was successfully accepted by
the system. Unfortunately, my Windows Update is still hanging at the very
same point that I described originally.

As you did not say what was the purpose of my putting in the file names that
you suggested, I am in no position to understand what I should do if the
procedure fails, as it has done.

Is there anything else you can suggest?

That's how components install themselves. You reinstalled the help components.

Hi David, I am grateful for the information. But as these help components
have not actually helped to rresolve the problem, I was wondering if anyone
has any other suggestions to make. It took me a day to reformat the system
and I really would not want to have to do that all over again. Can you
suggest anything further that I might do to resolve the issue?

Run Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options>Security Tab and click on "Trusted sites". Add here Windows Update.

I have tried that but the problem remains. I first added the words "Windows
Update" with the prefix https: as called for by a checked box. This didn't
work, so I unchecked the box and put in the words "Windows Update" (without
quotes). Same result. Nothing has changed. Is there anything else that can be
attempted to resolve the problem?

At the risk of being an absolute bore, this did not solve the problem. I
clicked on the link you supplied and saved it as a Favorite. The first three
workarounds were not applicable, (Netsonic not installed Automatically Detect
Box already cleared) so I tried the manual download of Iuctl.cab and
extracted Iuctl.inf. I right click to open Extract and installed that file on
the machine. I then tried Windows Update again. This time I got the message
"GET THE LATEST WINDOWS UPDATE SOFTWARE" It then instructed me that it had
made improvements to the website. It obliged me to download the new version
of the software. It would not proceed until I clicked Install Now. It
installed in seconds. Then the usual WU hangup as the program told me it was
looking for updates (but never found them).

I suppose I have now exhausted all avenues of approach. I should add that at
7.30 am today I set the automatic updating procedure to start at 8 am: it
didn't. I really don't want to have to go through the business of using the
dreaded recovery disk and then have to reload Norton and SP2 all over again,
to say nothing of all the other programs and drivers.

Is there any other way out?

There are a lot of hints.

Windows Update Fails:
Click on START and the RUN put in each line seen below and clicked on
OK. (do each one line at a time)
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\wups.dll
Disable your anti-virus when obtaining the updates.
Make sure that your firewall is allowing the connection to Windows Update .
This would be on ports 80 and 443.

Hi Frank

Thank you so much for taking an interest in my little problem. Actually, if
you look at the first reply (by Jose) to my original question, you'll see
that the REGSVR32 components were mentioned by Jose and I did import them. I
had not disabled Norton Internet Security, but I did get messages that each
of these files had been accepted successfully. However, I will try again,
switching off NIS before I do so.

However, although it may be as clear as a bell to an expert, I am by no
means certain as to how I would find my firewall or the ports 80 and 443 that
you mention. I presume that the links you supplied me with may be of some
help but even better would be if you can point me directly in the direction I
should go. My own expertise is in graphic design and stage sound effects and
I am currently just treading water on this present problem.

Sorry I don't use Windows Update in any way (though it still starts at every logon to find out it is not required).

As I did not have any response from you to my last message, I have done the
best I could. I set NIS to permit Windows Update for general purposes,
disabled NIS, ran the lines you mentioned, which were all accepted by the
system as successful, but still, when I click on Windows Update, the sme
problem persists. I ask WU to look for critical updates then I get the page
with the little green dots chasing along, but nothing further happens. There
is no error message.

In the circumstances, I reinstalled the full program of SP2, which I had
copied to CD, and set WU to automatic. I just switched on the machine again,
several hours later. I saw a balloon message that there were critical
downloads available. I clicked for this to proceed and the download went very
swiftly. After rebooting I went to WU, viewed installation history and saw
that a number of updates had installed. So something is working right.
Unfortunately the problem I described graphically above has not gone away.

Thank you for the kind advice you gave me. So far it hasn't worked but you
never know .... Maybe it will just right itself. I am not going to reformat
the computer so long as critical downloads will continue to arrive when
available.

Jose, thank you for your continued interest. The website to which you
directed me was in respect of Version 4. None of the suggestions in that site
referred to the problem I had, and still have. Maybe there is a troubleshoot
site covering V 5, but I don't know whre that is. In any event, you will see
from the coninuation of this thread that I have attempted to follow other
advice, which has also not cured the basic problem.
