Windows Update failure

Suu Quan

I recently went to "windows update"; it tells me I have 7
critical Updates and Services.
It always fails with no error (even done it one by one,
trying to isolate maybe 1 bad update?).

It performs the download for all packages, but comes to
an early end.
Here is the complete text.
-------------------------------------------
No Updates Were Installed

The following items failed to install. To try installing
them again, click Review and install updates, and then
click Install Now again.

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6
Service Pack 1 (KB867801)
Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1
(KB823353)
Critical Update for ADODB.stream (KB870669)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB840315)
Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB841873)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB839645)
------------------------------------

I have a firewall (but microsoft can pass thru), and
SpyBot & AdAware are installed also.

Please help

Tried it, but no luck.
renaming \Windows\System32\CatRoot2 to \Windows\System32
\CatRoot2 .old has no effect. Same symptoms.

SSL test succeeded and the Internet Options are unset
correctly.

You can download them from the Catalog and save to be installed later.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
How to Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323166

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what you
want, Click the "Go To Download Basket" link. Type in or browse to the location
where you want the updates saved to and then Click the "Download Now" button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

also check the C:\WUtemp to see if the Update files exist as being downloaded.
What happens is that a folder is created for the update and inside the folder is
the
actual installation file. Once the install is successful the WUtemp folder will
be empty.

also
Open Internet Explorer and either type or copy and then paste this into the
Address bar:
%windir%\windows update.log
Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error
code(s) associated with the latest failed attempt to download. Now look on the
Troubleshooter page for the error code(s) that you have located and try the
suggested solution.

Suu,

I'm having the EXACT same problem -- 7 updates to install, and can't
do any of them. Have you found a resolution yet?
