Try switching to MSFT Update which is the newer version that MFST
camouflages that released 15 months ago and among its features is a faster
install versus the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer System)
refrenced/explained in this MSKB. This solves a lot of glitches, problems,
errors with Windows Update.

Microsoft doesn't promote or announce this on their site and it's
unfortunate.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to talk directly with the IE Team and ask
them why. The ridiculous and smug answer (characteristic of these type
chats unfortunately all to often) was " for lots of reasons." I think that
says it all as to their imperious, elite, effete regard for MSFT customers
or more accurately in my case, people who help out MSFT cutomers
consistently with their products because their phone support is so pathetic.
They contract to Convergys of Ohio for this and it's hard to understand
those particular employees' (not Indians in general) thick accents and in my
opinion they know little about Windows and Office. Part of that is because
they are minimum waged butts in seats outsourced to India and MSFT is
concerned as to public customer support as to how cheap it is, not whether
it has any quality control whatsoever. Try it and see people. Give them a
test question and watch what happens.

For example, tell them you can't find an andministrative account and watch
them tell you to format the box.

This is one topic you won't see anyone with MSFT by their name address
because they are afraid to.

Come on softies--let's here you weigh in!

I had the problem. I solved it by stopping the "Windows update" service,
creating a new directory "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old", moving the
contents of "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" into that folder (cut &
paste), and then trying "Windows update" again.

Running WU restarted the service and it rebuilt the directory, uncorrupted.
The outermost directory seems to be protected, which is why I left it alone
and moved the contents inside.

Thank you. That worked for me too.

Because some files in the Windows SoftwareDistribution folder refuse being
moved to the Windows SoftwareDistrubution.old folder (they are in use and
can't be moved), I renamed the Windows SoftwareDistribution folder to
SoftwareDistribution.old and made a new SoftwareDistribution folder.
That worked.

This worked for me too. Except I just renamed SoftwareDistribution to
SoftwareDistribution.old, and created a new SoftwareDistribution folder.

I am having the same trouble in Vista RC2 Build 5744... I don't know of a
solution and the other posts on this thread are not useful...

Hello. I have had the same problem with my windows vista update. The computer
keeps telling me that windows could not update.

I have tried doing what you said below however when I try and rename the
file, I get a pop up saying " There is security controlling access to the
destination "windows". You do not have sufficent permission to perform this
operation. Please consult your administartor so you can be granted permission"

I am the administrator. Do you know whats wrong? How can I double check that
I am the administrator? When I check in my user accounts it says I am the
administrator??

I found a very simple fix based on some of the suggestions I read posted
here. It is not as elegant, maybe, but much easier:

I simply did a search in the Start Menu for the "SoftwareDistribution"
folder. In that folder I selected all of the items and then deleted them.
(Some files could not be deleted, so I skipped those.) Then I restarted my
computer.

When my computer came back on, I was able to use Windows Update normally
again!

Definitely does work, but my underlying question for you MVP's out there, is
why this is happening at all. Seems like there are more than one instances.

Hi there,

The proper way to do this is to stop the AU service,
Rename the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder,
Restart the AU service,
After about 5 minutes, issue the command - wuauclt /detectnow

Your SoftwareDistribution directory will be re-built automagically.

Cheers

Glad to hear it worked for you too! I could not understand the more technical
fixes, so I was happy to stumble upon this and see that it was repeatable.
What a weird glitch!

I have had this computer (and Vista) less than 3 months and this was the
third problem where I had to search discussion groups for a solution - the
other 2 were inability to open ViiV and a continuous message erroneously
saying my 2nd hard drive was filled. All 3 fixes involved only deleting one
or more files. Obviously Vista has a tendency to install files which cause
problems.

This also happened to my windows visa home premium just a few minutes ago. I
just deleted the contents of SoftwareDistribution and some of it can't be
deleted and restarted my PC. Windows update and windows defender worked again.

Thanks for posting this simplest solution.

I also found this to work for me.
