I am operating WinMe. I am current in all of my Automatic Updates, however, I would like to install update 828750. I downloaded it to the Windows Update Setup files but when I try to install this item it states that "Internet Explore 6 service pack 1 must be installed". The service pack is already installed on my computer. I am having problems installing this item and any other item from Microsoft catalogue, technet, ect. How can I install this item? Can you help?

The error message is stating that you already have installed a later update
which supersedes Q828750 (Oct-03).

It's best to let Windows Update identify patches you need instead of picking
& choosing ones you think you need, Betty.

Thanks for responding.
The reason that I would like to install this update, was that it was suggested that this particular patch would solve the problem that I have with IE 6. After downloading the Automatic Updates as well as using Internet Explorer, I am bombarded with a host of "coolwebsearch" and its variants., Dso exploits, and the like. (of course, I run anti-spyware on my system). My security levels are set to protect my privacy, which from time to time I must disable,(eg. to view pages or enter this community) it. One respected anti-spyware site, suggested that one was vulnerable to certain exploits if : "...Run, type command, enter "Jveiw", if you receive a "bad command" then you are protected, it you receive "information" then you are vulnerable". Well, for me, I restored my system and did as suggested. I received "Bad command" until I began installing my "Critical Updates." Regardless, of my current updates, this "jveiw" "information" is still there. I believe that it must be something to the information that was given because I don't understand how until I use internet explorer and Automatic Updates, and am "bombarded" with "coolwebsearch" pest and Dso exploits, and other pest.
Please shed some light on this problem.
Thanks in advance.

The later patch(es) you already have installed include the fixes in Q828750,
Betty. There was a point about 6 months ago where the fixes did "protect"
you from CWS hijackings but recent variants (and there's a lot of 'em) have
found other ways to enter your system, **usually when you click on a link or
install freeware from an unreliable source**.

See these pages for tips on dealing with hijackware:

SpywareBlaster and IE-SpyAd can help protect you. See the first link above.

PA Bear,
Thank you for responding. I am running Spybot1.3, Adaware6, Spysweeper, Window Washer, Pestpatrol, Winpatrol, Nortons System Works and Firewall 2004, IE Spyads, StartupMonitor, CW Shredder. I am not a paranoid but very concerned about my internet security. In reference to your reply, would you suggest as CW Shredder suggests, since I can seem to fix this "hole" inspite of my current update, that I should uninstall MS JVM and replace it with Sun Java? If so, how would one go about doing that? It seems to work fine for people using XP but not for people using other windows version. PA Bear, forgive me, I don't seem to be getting the "bottom line". Can you spell it out for me? Am I protected from this "IE hole" as well?
Thanks in Advance

PA Bear Alan Edwards,
Thank you for responding to my post. Your advice and time is greatly appreciated.
However, PA Bear,
Although I failed to mention that I also run Spyblaster, SpyGuard, ect., I feel as though I am running everything under the sun. I have visited some of the sites mentioned in current and previous post and every security, spyware, pestware, ect., site that I can imagine. For all that I have done I cannot seem to relieve myself of the "Coolwebsearch" pest. As stated before, I only get these "pest" when I visit a Microsoft website. For instance, I can run a clean scan prior to visiting this site, after I visit this site, I end up with a coolwebsearch pest. I have tried everything
that I know how to do, run programs, research information ect. again, even went into the registry to eliminate the pest, to no avail. I came here to the community, Micorosoft, looking for an answer. Not to say that your post haven't been helpful, it has, but, it didn't give me anything above and beyond what I already researched. Forgive me, if it seems like I am browbeating you. I don't mean to. I am just frustrated. When I suggested that you give me "the bottom line", "Straight talk", I was very serious because I am almost brain dead from the frustation.
Forgive my density.
Betty
