I recently had to restore my PC using the recovery DVD. It reverted to the
way it was when I bought it, but now when I go to the windows update site to
download SP2 and other updates, the site does not respond. It just keeps
searching without any response. Is there something I have to turn off in
order to download updates ? I checked to make sure Windows was activated and
it was.

Are there any error messages?

There could be a number of reasons:-

1. Internet Explorer temporary files corrupted.
2. Spyware.
3. Third party programs running in background.
4. Windows Update Engine corrupted.

Suggestion 1:-
Clearing Temporary Internet files, cookies and history in Internet Explorer
Tools>Internet Options>General
You’ll see Delete Cookies, Delete files, Delete History
NB: "Delete all offline content", will delete all files needed to browse the websites offline.
Reboot and try Windows Update again.

Suggestion 2:-
The below links assist you in checking your system for parasites:-

Please note that some malware may kill the internet connection when it is removed, the program on
the link below will enable you to regain the internet connection.

Spyware Programs links:-

Suggestion 3:-
Make sure you haven’t got anything blocking Windows Update like Nortons, Zonealarm etc
Also make sure you don’t have a Web Accelerator working in the background such as NetZerio, HiSpeed,
Speedband etc.

Suggestion 4:
Reinstall the Windows Update Engine

Otherwise post to Windows Update newsgroup giving as much information as possible and what OS you
are using.

Thanks for your suggestions. I loaded SP2 off a disc and that cured the
problem. The Update site now works. The SP1 version I had after the rebuild
must have been too old to work with the site. I will keep your suggestions
for potential use in future.
