Windows Update Blaster Worm problem...

Frank

I am using Windows XP Home and always scan and update the critical updates.

I downloaded and installed the MS03-06:Security Update for Windows XP
(823980) but it does not seem to install itself. I look at my installation
history and it shows as installed but doing a new scan show this update as
an update to install. I did install it twice, once with microsofts auto
update and another time manually (web site), but when I scan it still shows
as needing to be downloaded

Any thoughts on this problem?

I looked at your link below and did a find on 0x8000000A and found nothing

Any other suggestions? And thanks for your input, greatly appreciated

Hi

Have a look in the Windows Update.log file - which in the %systemroot%
folder - to see if there are any error numbers - towards the bottom of the
file. If you find any go to the following page and see if any of those
error numbers are referenced:

Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and
look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show
hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

IF this is Windows XP:
Select Windows Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after
each line:
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit

Find (Search) the folder \WUTEMP & empty out all its contents. Then
retry Windows Update. If it still fails, do the section below.

This is for all editions of Windows. Just follow section for your
version:
Read, study, and do what this article recommends. One of the things you
will do
is to *very carefully* remove some files from the C:\Program
Files\WindowsUpdate\V4 folder ; plus some more.

Glad that you got your problem sorted out.

Hi

Can you email me - please don't send the file to this NG - a copy of your iuhist.xml file - which can be found in the Program files\WindowsUpdate\v4 folder
