Windows Update and AMD Drivers

I have an AMD XP2200+ and XP Pro SP1; Windows Update
insists a new AMD driver, dated 12/17/02. I have a
driver dated 7/1/01. If I let Update install the new
driver, Device Manager reports a problem with the CPU
that I can only correct by reloading the driver from the
MB vendor install disk. What's going on with these
drivers?

You have learned by example the reason why one should never use Windows
update to update drivers. Only get those from the manufacturer's web
site. Ignore them on WU.
