Windows thinks my old DVD is new hardware

I recently installed a firmware update for my DVD drive and Windows keeps
alerting me that new hardware has been installed. When I click to install
the drivers, it says it can't find them. It s a Sony DW-U50A. The firmware
I installed was version 1.5g.
thanks!

Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, delete/remove any and all DVD
drives you find, reboot, Windows should re-detect the drives and install the
correct drivers.

This is normal. Plug and Play detects a different firmware and will update
the DVD drive info in Device Manager. You need to clear out any "left-over"
DVD drive entries in Device Manager and let XP re-detect them on the next
reboot.

Dear Yves,
Thanks so much for your guidance. I installed msxml.msi SP2 for another
application, and the prompting about the new hardware disappeared
immeidately, thank GOD.
