Sony DRX-820UL no drivers

Hi Folks,

Anyone have any ideas on this before I send it back to the store?

Newly purchased Sony-DRX-820UL external DVD Writer.

Windows XP detects new hardware but says there are no drivers for it
so the hardware installation never completes. According to Sony, the
DRX-820UL should be automatically detected and installed by Windows.
There doesn't seem to be any drivers from Sony at all, only a firmware
update which is no use since the DVD writer isn't installed yet.

Tested on 3 Different machines, XP Media Center 2005, XP Home, Windows
2000. All with the same results.

For that drive: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/drx820ultdwn.htm#docs

According to the manual:
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/downloads/drx820ult/DRX820ULT_OI.pdf you should
have a software disk included in the package.

Installation instructions:
http://sony.storagesupport.com/cgi-...KvuMfBUndbAhg2yfB6c4HZDsSImIph/dtree/view/416
Select which way you are connecting the drive for the proper installation, they are
not the same.

Also stated in the manual:
<quote>
The firmware is the built-in software that makes the drive work. Some problems
encountered when using the drive can be solved simply by updating the drive firmware.
Firmware updates are available on the user support Web site. Access the site, make
sure that there is an update for your firmware, and follow the instructions on the
screen to proceed with download and installation.
</quote>

I suggest you get the firmware update and install it following their explicit
instructions or contact their support.

Hi Brian,

Many thanks for taking the time to respond.

Unfortunately none of those scenarios work. Been there tried them all.

1: The software disk that is included only has Nero Software on it. No
drivers at all.

2: Already tried multiple connection methods (including the
recommended method). None work. The drive is detected by windows but
windows then says that it doesn't have any available drivers for it.

3: Firmware upgrade would be great, but you can't update the firmware
on a device if windows can't install the drivers for it, as it's an
"unknown device".

4: Live Support basically told me to "take a hike", as they only
support people in the USA/Canada. I'm in the UK.

What I'm hoping for is that someone has the drivers for this device
and they can maybe send them to me, as Windows XP / 2000 cannot find
any drivers for it. The Sony sites do not have drivers for it (because
they claim Windows should install them automatically). I googled for
the best part of 6 hours looking for fixes / drivers.

Again, thanks for the time you took to respond Brian, it's
appreciated.

Typical Sony site info, absolutely useless
I see you have to register to even access specs/installation details

If Sony claim win has the drivers you should contact Sony support, however
from past experience I doubt you'll have much joy.
I personnally would think long and hard before purchasing any Sony pc
product.

did u connect the hardware properly?
the bus is connected properly? That makes all the difference. Make sure
that the bus is connected firmly into both sockets---the one on the DVD
driv and the 1 on the computer

Did any of the machines ever had the correct motherboard (IDE) chipset drivers
installed?

Which IDE channel did you connect the drive to?

how is the drive set as (Master or Slave?)

Did you even bother to read my post properly? I'm thinking NOT!!

I clearly stated:

"3: Firmware upgrade would be great, but you can't update the firmware
on a device if windows can't install the drivers for it, as it's an
"unknown device"."

ie, the Sony doesn't even appear in the window for step 5.

However, I thank you for your condascending attitude, due to your
inability to understand plain engllish.

I'm sending the DVD writer back since it doesn't work on 4 of my
machines, 3 Windows and one iMac....it can't just be a coincidence.

Please consider this matter closed.

Let me point you back to your own words, where you "clearly" stated in #2:
<quote>

</quote>

And since I clearly see no mention of which connection/install method you I leave
you with this.

The correct USB drive installation process is as follows:
1.. DO NOT CONNECT THE DRIVE
2.. Install the software, PC or MAC
3.. Power down the system and connect the drive, if there is a hub DO NOT use it at
this time
4.. Power on the drive FIRST
5.. Upon system power up, the system will detect the drive and install the drivers.
If the system displays the drive as an Unknown Device in Device Manager, double-click
on it, and select Install Driver. This should install the drivers, and the drive will
appear under CD-Rom. If you recieve the message that "Windows is already using the
best driver for this device," simply highlight and remove the Unknown Device. Reboot
the system and/or turn the drive off and on to refresh.
