Windows tells me its not registered, then it tells me it is....

For some reason, Windows XP is continuously telling me that I need to
register the product before I can continue to use it. It has a countdown,
and I'm at 27 days left. The last time this happened I had to clear my
entire hard drive and reinstall windows because it locks up. Every time I
click 'register now'. it tells me that its already registered. Yet, the next
time I start up my pc, I get the same message. Can someone help me?

Hello,

The following KB might help you:

You are prompted to activate Windows every time you restart your computer

I suspect that you are correct but the OP says that it is asking for
registration and not "Activation". Maybe he will clear this up for us.

You described my problem exactly. The only problem is, I did just that,
everything it said to do (save doing it manually because I don't want to
screw anything up). For some reason, once I restart my computer, the General
Help thing freezes and then I get a good old "such and such has encountered
an error and needs to close" message. Why will it not work correctly? Any
suggestions on how to fix this would certainly be much appreciated.

Well, you certainly found exactly what my problem is. The only problem is
that once I installed the Guided Help thing and restarted my pc, it froze up
with a good old "such and such is not responding" message and then I had to
close it. Then, just to taunt me, that sam "windows requires activation"
message popped up telling me that i had 26 days left. Is there anything you
can do to help me?

I don't have the answer for you but I suggest you make sure you have
everything that you care about on that machine backed up.
I had the same problem with a pc a while back. It was a Dell with the OS
preactivated out of the box. I had used it for about a year when I got the
message that it needed to be activated. Since I didn't need the machine
right then, I took all my stuff off of it and waited out the time to see
what would happen. I ended up getting locked out and had to reinstall the
OS.

are you saying that after some time your system get locked [regardless of a
fact you had data backed up earlier] and although physicaly fully functional
just a matter of some licence, it refused to work and kept your data locked
and unavailable?

if i understand a private property, unless a system is damaged and data
destroyed, upon expiry [of licence] it may lose some functionality but must
be able to allow you to retrieve any your data still left on that system!

am i thinking well?

As far as I could tell, I was completely locked out of the pc with my only
option being to contact Microsoft and arrange to purchase a new key or
whatever. Didn't matter to me because I just rebuilt it using a Volume
Licence. I didn't experiment with any ways to get to the data because I had
everything backed up. And I have never heard of being allowed to retrieve
your data once you are locked out due to not being activated. I suppose it
might be possible but I wouldn't make that assumption.
