I'm getting "Windows could not start becasue of missing or corrupt file:

\windows\system32\config\system

I have a HP873n with MCE 2005...I changed my video card from ATI 9550 to a
Nvidia 6200 and was changing the display options for the HDTV, Than my system
locked up and when I re-booted I'm getting the above error message...

Please advise the best way to correct this.

Thanks...

Bruce....

Thanks for the response.....I'll try and work something out...My problem
with what is suggested on the KB article is that I have a Hp 873n, which came
with MCE 2002 pre-loaded and I did all the upgrades to 2005, Then my hard
drive went bad & it was still under warranty at that time & "Geek Squad"
loaded up MCE 2004 to the new hard drive and I have never had any Recovery
Disks.. I do have the 2 Upgrades disk for MCE 2004 & MCE 2005 from HP... And
of course all the support & warrenties have run out w/ HP & Best Buy...

Do you jknow if the Upgrade disk for MCE 2005 would work?

If it's a true installation CD, and not some kludged-together OEM
Recovery CD, it should be able to allow the necessary repairs.

If your computer hard drive is dieing, it won't matter if you replace the
file...it'll get re-deleted almost immideately or some other error will occur.

If this is the case, back up your hard drive ASAP and get a new one.

Sometimes, if you yell at HP enough, they might let you slide past your
warranty :) [We had the same problem]
