\windows\system32\ config\system error

xp,athlon 1700, 80 g seagate(c drive) 30 g maxtor, ddr 2100 640 mb.
system has been working fine for months. only new instal has been zone alarm.
getting this error at boot. have tried safe mode but goes back to this
error. have gone into bios and am booting from cd-rom with original oem
recovery disk. still getting error. did get into recovery console at first
and tried to use it, but md temp command useless, says already have temp
file. did try to delete service packs ( as per old post) but still nada. now
can't even get to instal to reload windows.

suggestions?

When the pc is booting up ,Tap F8 Function key to get bootup options. Tap &
keep repeat tapping F8 !

When presented with bootup choices, select Last Known Good Configuration.
Now try getting into Windows. Does that work?
