Windows System File Checker

K

Ken

Following a Runtime Error message and an inquiry elsewhere (a
Mozilla/Seamonkey group)...

I have located information on an official Windows site (Article ID:
310747) referring to a Windows System File Checker (Sfc.exe) which uses
command lines in conjunction with the Windows File Protection (WFP)
feature. Please, how do I actually use these command lines? Type them
somewhere, I guess. But where?

Thanks - Ken in Oz

Try Start, Run. You'll get a small box you can enter them in.

You can also enter them at a command prompt (start, run, CMD)

Thanks muchly, Patrick. In the meantime, I had located parallel (and
slightly more detailed) instructions here: >
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43051.html

As part of the System File Checker process, I ended up running my
Windows XP Home Edition installation CD. Am not sure if my Runtime
Error problem is fixed - I'll go and check soon.

Thanks again - Ken in Oz

Ken again. No, unfortunately the problem is not fixed.

I am still being told:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe
R6034
An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library
incorrectly. Please contact the application's support team for more
information.

Where do I go from here, anyone, please? (A Seamonkey forum told me to
use the Windows System File Checker, as originally reported here.)

Are you using the VLC plugin to view video files?

If you disable the VLC plugin, does that help (most restart FF)

I HAVE the VLC player, Jose, and I THINK I have its plugins, but by
default I think my computer plays visual files on my IrfanView plugin or
my Nero ShowTime player or my Quick Time player or ...

How do I disable the VLC plugin, please? I looked but couldn't see any
reference to plugins. (Also, while doing this, I was advised by a VLC
announcement to download its latest version. I have now done this and
uninstalled the old version, but haven't yet installed the new one.)

One other question. You say: '(most restart FF)'. I'm not sure what is
meant here. I guess that 'most' should be 'must' but what is 'FF', please?

Thanks - Ken in Oz

Ken again. Jose, I uninstalled my VLC media player and that seemed to
'solve' the problem. Now, using my prefered SeaMonkey browser, I can
play certain video files - Windows Media Player takes over and plays
them. But if you could tell me how, rather than fully uninstall the VLC
player, I could simply set it so that it didn't interfere with Windows
Media Player, that would suit me better! (My experiments that way so
far, e.g., not turning on a VLC option to load a Mozilla plugin, haven't
worked.)

Hoping. Thanks.

Jim, more or less by coincidence, I also just downloaded the full
version K-Lite Pack of codecs (from www.free-codecs.com), and it solved
at least one other problem I was having with running some video clips.
But I'm going to miss the VLC media player, if only because it can drag
more audio volume from certain clips and DVDs than any other media
player I have on board. (I'll keep a file of the VLC media player on my
computer, ready for a quick install if I have to.)

Hee. FF = Firefox. Most = Must. Sometimes my ASR makes an error.
Sometimes.

I don't use Seamonkey, VLC, or any of the other things you listed so I
could only research and guess and you don't need that.
