Windows suddenly asks for password

Windows recently asked for a password in order to logon.
THis has never happened before and I do not recall ever
establishing a password. Is anyone familiar witht his -
if so what does one do to fix it?

look in your user account settings in your control
panel. You can control the way you log on, including
password settings.
 
If it is the same problem that I have then you can't get
to the desktop, let alone the control panel.
 
I can't look in my control panel, because I can't get past
the password and logon screen. Is there any way to
disable this - or reset it?
