I have just completed a clean install xp pro in a hard drive where I thought
I wiped clean win98. I am now asked at start up which windows I would like to
choose winxp pro or win 98. How can I clear the win 98 at start up.

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then read similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Professional" /fastdetect

It looks like what you have done is a parallel installation of Windows XP.
This is where you install a second operating system side by side to the one
already loaded. I would place the CD in the cdrom tray and reboot and restart
the process. This time make sure you completely remove the active partition
and create a new one then proceed with the installation. This should take
care of your problem.

Since you just completed the installation, you can't have much, if anything,
on the drive that you need to keep. In this situation, the easiest thing to
do may be to start over.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the
existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).
