windows startup

lately my computer has been crashing. When I try to restart it, it
shows the windows xp page with the status bar, but when it should then
go to the loggin page where I can choose a user, instead the screen
goes grey and a box shows briefly that I think (it is only there for a
second) says "the requested action was unsuccessful". The computer then
shuts down again. So far I have been able to boot up windows by trying
again and again, but last time it took so many tries that I was getting
really worried. All virus scans come up negative. Any help would be
appreciated.

Have you ran a spyware scan as well as a virus scan.
