windows sounds

I have XP Home on a year old HP PC, but when it boots up
or shuts down, I don't hear the sounds. But when I test
the .wav sound files with the audio tool in the control
panel, the startup and shutdown sounds do play ok then.
So I checked the .wav files path in the registry, and it
shows as; %systemroot%\media\windows xp startup.wav for
the bootup and the same except with windows xp
shutdown.wav for shutoff. Is this equal to this path;
C:\windows\media ? And I looked in that media folder, and
it does have all the system sound files in it. All other
sounds do play such as music CDs and media player. Thanks
for any help, (e-mail address removed)

Jim,

Just a thought, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment >
Volume Control. Are your PC Speakers muted? The audio test uses .wav files
and will work even if the PC Speaker is muted.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

On its General page, ensure that 'Beep on Errors' is checked. This
condition is used to trigger the playing of sound at start and exit.
You can set the sound that appears in other places to None in the
regular Sounds applet
