Windows sound some working, some not

My speaker has always acted weird. I use a USB headset for voice recognition
software, and therefore my output is also through the USB headset. All of a
sudden, all sounds from windows will not register. This includes America
on-line sounds and any beeps, bleeps, etc. that normally occur. Please help!
